Beringer, established in 1876 by brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer, stands as Napa Valley's oldest continuously operating winery. The Borrow Pit Vineyard, located in the warm Calistoga AVA, gets its distinctive name from the historic practice of 'borrowing' gravel and soil from the site to construct local infrastructure, including the nearby Silverado Trail. This excavation left behind a highly well-draining, rocky basin that forces the Cabernet Sauvignon vines to struggle, digging deep for nutrients. The resulting grapes are exceptionally concentrated. Typically crafted as a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in French oak barrels, this wine showcases the classic Calistoga terroir with intense dark blackberry fruit, muscular tannins, and a distinct mineral undertone reflecting its volcanic and alluvial soil heritage.
