Weingut Bernhart's Portugieser is a soulful tribute to a historic grape variety that has long been a cornerstone of the Pfalz region. Despite its name, the origins of Portugieser are shrouded in legend, historically rumored to have been imported from Portugal to Austria in the late 18th century, though modern ampelography points to an Eastern European ancestry. In the Pfalz, it evolved into a popular everyday red, but in the hands of Gerd Bernhart, it receives the meticulous care usually reserved for noble varieties. Sourced from older vines planted on the limestone-rich soils of the German-French border, this wine transcends the grape's simple reputation. Bernhart employs traditional fermentation and gentle aging in large oak casks, yielding a wine that balances bright red berry fruit—like wild strawberries and redcurrants—with a delicate herbal spice and a distinct, mineral-driven elegance characteristic of the Schweigen terroir.

Weingut Bernhart ligger i Schweigen-Rechtenbach ved Pfalz' sydligste spids klos op ad den franske grænse. Det anerkendte familiedomæne er berømt for elegant at forene tyske og alsassiske vindyrkningstraditioner. Vingården ledes af Gerd Bernhart, som har været medlem af det prestigefyldte VDP siden 2004, og her skabes udtryksfulde, terroir-præcise vine fra historiske parceller, der strækker sig på tværs af landegrænsen, såsom Schweigener Sonnenberg.
