The Sonnenberg 'RG' (Rundes Gewann) Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs is a masterpiece of cross-border viticulture, sourced from a highly prized parcel within the historic Schweigener Sonnenberg vineyard that straddles the boundary between Germany's Pfalz and France's Alsace. This unique geopolitical heritage means the vines sink their roots deep into French clay-limestone (Kalkmergel) soils, while the grapes are crafted into wine just over the border in Germany. The 'Rundes Gewann' parcel is celebrated for its old vines and optimal microclimate, yielding fruit of exceptional concentration. Bernhart vinifies this GG using traditional open-top fermentation followed by extensive aging in French oak barriques. The resulting wine is a profound expression of Pinot Noir, characterized by its seamless integration of dark berry fruit, savory forest floor notes, chalky minerality, and a noble, tightly coiled tannin structure.
