The Schweigen Sonnenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs (GG) from Weingut Bernhart is a masterclass in tension, born from a vineyard that literally straddles the geopolitical border between Germany and France. Located in the southern Pfalz, the historic Sonnenberg vineyard has vines planted on both sides of the boundary line, a legacy of complex European history. The soils here are dominated by heavy limestone marl (Kalkmergel), which imparts a profound, chalky minerality and razor-sharp precision to the Riesling grapes. Hand-harvested from old, low-yielding vines, this GG undergoes a meticulous selection process and is fermented using indigenous yeasts, often resting on its fine lees to build texture and complexity. The result is a dry, powerful, yet incredibly elegant white wine that balances vibrant citrus and stone fruit aromas with a deep, smoky, herbal-mineral core, embodying the unique cross-border terroir of Schweigen.

Weingut Bernhart ligger i Schweigen-Rechtenbach ved Pfalz' sydligste spids klos op ad den franske grænse. Det anerkendte familiedomæne er berømt for elegant at forene tyske og alsassiske vindyrkningstraditioner. Vingården ledes af Gerd Bernhart, som har været medlem af det prestigefyldte VDP siden 2004, og her skabes udtryksfulde, terroir-præcise vine fra historiske parceller, der strækker sig på tværs af landegrænsen, såsom Schweigener Sonnenberg.
