The Spice Tree is a monument to innovation and a legendary chapter in modern Scotch whisky history. Originally launched in 2005 by Compass Box founder John Glaser, this blended malt was famously banned by the Scotch Whisky Association due to its pioneering use of inner French oak staves—a traditional winemaking technique deemed unorthodox in Scotland. Undeterred, Glaser re-engineered the process, returning with a legal and equally brilliant method: aging the whisky in custom-built casks featuring heavily toasted French oak heads. Sourced primarily from Highland distilleries like Clynelish, Dailuaine, and Teaninich, the spirit undergoes a secondary maturation in these bespoke vessels, which imparts an extraordinarily rich, sweet, and deeply spiced character reminiscent of baking spices, toasted oak, and rich malt.
