Nestled in the heart of Speyside, Craigellachie is famously regarded as a defiant traditionalist, often referred to as the 'Bad Boy of Speyside' for its stubborn adherence to old-school whisky-making. While most modern distilleries transitioned to efficient shell-and-tube condensers, Craigellachie proudly retains its traditional copper worm tubs. These coiled pipes, submerged in cold water, restrict copper contact during condensation, resulting in a heavy, sulfurous, and muscular spirit. This specific expression, matured in a refill bourbon barrel (Cask No. 159), highlights the distillery's robust character. Refill casks are highly favored by purists as they exert a gentler wood influence, allowing the complex, oil-rich, and tropical fruit-laden DNA of the Craigellachie distillate to shine through without being overshadowed by dominant oak vanillins.
