Craigellachie is often whispered about among whisky connoisseurs as the defiant rebel of Speyside. Founded in 1891 during the late-Victorian whisky boom by the legendary Peter Mackie and Alexander Edward, the distillery has stubbornly resisted modern efficiency in favor of character. While most distilleries transitioned to modern condensers, Craigellachie famously retained its traditional copper worm tubs—coiled pipes cooled in cold water tanks. This slow condensation process limits copper contact, leaving a heavy, sulfurous, and meaty character in the new-make spirit. When filled into a refill barrel, such as Cask No 800592, the wood plays a supporting role. Rather than masking the spirit with heavy oak or sherry influence, the refill wood allows Craigellachie's muscular, pineapple-tinged, and savory distillate to take center stage, maturing slowly into a complex and unapologetically old-school single malt.
