The estate of Egon Muller-Scharzhof is synonymous with the absolute pinnacle of German winemaking, nestled in the cool Saar valley of the Mosel region. The legendary Scharzhofberg vineyard, with its steep, south-facing slopes of weathered grey Devonian slate, has been cultivated since monastic times in the Middle Ages. Egon Muller's Auslese bottlings, particularly rare auction lots such as the Nr5, are crafted only in exceptional vintages where noble rot develops perfectly. Made from 100% Riesling, often from extremely old, ungrafted vines, the wine is fermented in traditional old oak fuder casks. This produces a breathtaking elixir that balances intense, honeyed sweetness with a laser-like, electric acidity and a profound, smoky mineral backbone, reflecting the unique, chilly microclimate of the Saar.
