Ried Liebenberg is one of the most distinctive single vineyards in the Wachau, situated on steep, south-facing stone terraces in Dürnstein. The name 'Liebenberg' historically hints at a 'beloved mountain,' and indeed, it is cherished for its unique geological makeup. The vineyard is dominated by paragneiss and dark amphibolite soils, which are highly heat-retentive yet cooled by nightly drafts from the nearby Waldviertel forest. This dramatic diurnal temperature shift allows the Grüner Veltliner grapes to ripen slowly while retaining a vibrant, electric acidity. F.X. Pichler crafts this wine to highlight the site's signature tension, resulting in a Grüner Veltliner that is less about sheer power and more about mineral precision, smoky complexity, and crystalline purity. Fermented and aged in a combination of stainless steel and large, neutral Austrian oak casks, it beautifully captures the cool-climate energy of this legendary Danube terrace.
