Frescobaldi's relationship with Pinot Nero is deeply rooted in the unique history of Castello di Pomino, an estate nestled in the high-altitude Apennine foothills of Tuscany. In 1855, Leonia degli Albizi, an ancestor of the Frescobaldi family, returned from France and boldly planted French varietals, including Pinot Nero, in these cool-climate vineyards. Situated between 400 and 700 meters above sea level, the terroir benefits from dramatic diurnal temperature swings and rocky, well-drained soils, allowing this notoriously finicky grape to thrive far from its Burgundian home. The wine is typically fermented in temperature-controlled tanks and aged in French oak barriques. This produces a refined, elegant expression of Tuscan Pinot Nero, characterized by bright red berry aromas, wild strawberries, floral violet notes, and a delicate touch of earthy spice, representing a fascinating departure from traditional Sangiovese-dominated Tuscan reds.
