Angelo Gaja, a visionary who revolutionized Piedmontese winemaking, famously introduced international grape varieties to the historic Langhe hills, defying local conventions. Among these pioneering creations is Rossj-Bass, a white wine named in honor of his youngest daughter, Rossana (affectionately called Rossj), combined with the Piedmontese word bass, referring to the lower elevation of the vineyard sites. Primarily crafted from Chardonnay grown in the clay and limestone soils of the Barbaresco and Serralunga d'Alba areas, the blend historically incorporates a small percentage of Sauvignon Blanc. It undergoes fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel followed by a short, precise aging period of about six months in oak barriques. This careful process preserves the vibrant, crisp acidity of the cool-climate fruit while imparting a refined texture, subtle spice, and elegant complexity that beautifully showcases the white winemaking potential of a region famous for its reds.
