Gaja's Vignaveja, translating to 'old vineyard' in the local Piedmontese dialect, represents a masterclass in elevating the traditional Barbera grape. Historically regarded as a rustic, high-acid daily drinker for Piedmontese farmers, Barbera was reimagined by the legendary Gaja estate. Sourced from older, low-yielding vines in the Langhe hills, this wine benefits from the concentration that only deep-rooted vines can provide. Gaja applied modern cellar techniques, including precise oak aging, to tame Barbera's naturally vibrant acidity and wrap it in a velvety, structured frame. The result is a sophisticated red boasting intense dark cherry, blackberry, earthy spices, and a refined complexity that pays homage to the historic terroir of Piedmont.

Established in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja in Barbaresco, Gaja is among the most influential dynasties in modern Italian viticulture. The estate's global stature was fundamentally transformed by fourth-generation icon Angelo Gaja, who introduced temperature-controlled fermentation, French barrique aging, green harvesting, and single-vineyard bottlings to Piedmont. Viticulture across the Langhe's classic calcareous marls focuses on biodiversity, soil vitality, and organic tenets tailored to climate adaptation, eschewing rigid certification schemes. Gaja is celebrated worldwide for its benchmark Nebbiolos—notably the flagship Barbaresco DOCG alongside historic single-vineyard crus Sorì San Lorenzo, Sorì Tildìn, and Costa Russi—and its Barolo cru Sperss.
