The Nierstein Pettenthal Riesling GG from Gunderloch is a dry masterpiece born from one of the most legendary vineyards on Rheinhessen's famous Roter Hang (Red Slope). The Pettenthal vineyard is renowned for its steep, east-facing slope directly overlooking the Rhine River, characterized by its striking 280-million-year-old red clay-slate soil. This unique terroir, combined with the warming influence of the river, yields a Riesling of extraordinary tension, smoky minerality, and exotic stone fruit character. Gunderloch crafts this Grosses Gewaechs (Grand Cru) using traditional methods, including selective hand-harvesting, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, and patient aging on the lees. The result is a profound, structured white wine that beautifully balances power, vibrant acidity, and salty minerality, representing the pinnacle of dry German Riesling.

Weingut Gunderloch was established in 1890 when Mainz banker Carl Gunderloch acquired prime parcels on the steep banks of the Rhine, later becoming a founding member of the VDP. Anchored in Nackenheim, the estate comprises approximately 29 to 31 hectares centered along the legendary Roter Hang ('Red Slope'). This dramatic geological formation is dominated by 280-million-year-old Permian red shale, clay, and slate (Rotliegend), which imbues the vines with unmatched mineral depth, phenolic tension, and warmth reflected from the adjacent river. Sixth-generation winegrower Johannes Hasselbach took the helm in 2016, ushering in certified organic farming, spontaneous fermentations, and a paradigm shift toward tension, lower alcohol, and transparency.
