✨ Technical Specifications
Sourced from the dizzyingly steep, terraced cliffs of the lower Mosel near Winningen, 'von blauem Schiefer' is a profound liquid translation of Devonian blue slate. Reinhard Löwenstein's revolutionary approach rejects traditional German sugar-based classifications in favor of terroir, showcasing how different slate colors shape the soul of Riesling. The blue slate imparts a cool, crystalline precision, marked by intense flinty minerality, wild herbs, and a taut, vibrating acidity. Crafted with minimal intervention, the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and spend extended time on the lees in traditional large oak Fuder casks. This slow, natural process coaxes out a deep, structured, and multi-layered white wine that captures the sheer, dramatic beauty of its vertical birthplace.
🍾 About the Producer
Founded in 1980 by Reinhard Löwenstein and Cornelia Heymann-Löwenstein, Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein is situated in Winningen within the dramatic, vertiginous Terrassenmosel region of Germany. Renowned as a pioneering visionary of terroir-driven, dry Mosel Riesling, the estate champions low-intervention cellar practices, ambient yeast fermentations, and meticulous organic viticulture across extreme slate terraces. Cultivating celebrated Grand Cru vineyards such as Winninger Röttgen and the intricately geologized Winninger Uhlen, the winery creates wines deeply reflective of their distinct slate soils. Their celebrated portfolio ranges from profound, mineral-rich Grosses Gewächs dry Rieslings to intensely layered, botrytized dessert wines of remarkable longevity.
