The Winninger Schieferterrassen Riesling is a love letter to the dramatic, gravity-defying terraces of the lower Mosel, known as the Terrassenmosel. The name 'Schieferterrassen' translates directly to 'slate terraces,' paying homage to the fractured Devonian slate soils that cling to these dizzyingly steep slopes. Hand-harvested from various terraced parcels in Winningen, this wine captures the intense minerality and warmth of the slate, which acts as a natural heat reservoir during the day. Under the low-intervention philosophy of the Heymann-Löwenstein estate, the juice undergoes spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and rests on its lees in traditional large oak casks. This patient process coaxes out a multi-layered, dry Riesling that challenges the historical stereotype of sweet Mosel wines, offering instead a profound, texturally complex expression of pure liquid stone, wild herbs, and vibrant citrus.
