Highland Park, established in 1798 on the windswept Orkney Islands of Scotland, is steeped in Viking heritage and legendary smuggling lore. Founded by Magnus Eunson, a direct descendant of Viking pioneers who worked as a church officer by day and an illicit distiller by night, the distillery sits on high ground overlooking Kirkwall. The unique terroir of Orkney heavily influences this single malt; the islands' fierce winds prevent trees from growing, resulting in peat that is rich in decaying heather. When burned to dry the malted barley, this heather-rich peat imparts a distinctively sweet, floral, and aromatic peat smoke. The 1991 distillation represents a classic era of production, typically matured in hand-selected sherry-seasoned oak casks, yielding a complex spirit that balances coastal brine, heather honey, light peat smoke, and rich dried-fruit notes.
