β¨ Technical Specifications
Hugel's Pinot Gris is a masterful expression of one of Alsace's noble grape varieties, historically referred to in the region as Tokay d'Alsace before EU regulations protected Hungary's legendary sweet wine appellation. Sourced primarily from the clay-limestone soils surrounding the medieval village of Riquewihr, this wine benefits from the dry, sunny microclimate created by the rain shadow of the Vosges Mountains. Famille Hugel vinifies this wine using gravity-flow methods and ages it in historic, century-old neutral oak casks in their subterranean cellars. This traditional approach preserves the grape's natural opulence, vibrant acidity, and signature smoky, stone-fruit complexity without imparting oak flavors, resulting in a dry, deeply textured white wine with remarkable gastronomic versatility.
πΎ About the Producer
Established in 1639 in the picturesque medieval village of Riquewihr, Famille Hugel is one of the most venerable and celebrated wine producers in Alsace, France. Managed continuously by more than a dozen generations of the Hugel family, the estate combines historic family vineyards with carefully sourced fruit to champion the diverse terroirs of the region. Hugel was instrumental in establishing the official regulations for Alsace's revered late-harvest categories, Vendanges Tardives and SΓ©lection de Grains Nobles. Renowned globally for their purity, elegance, and ageability, the winery crafts benchmark dry and sweet expressions of noble Alsace varieties, particularly Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris, vinified traditionally in century-old oak foudres.
