Steingarten, translating to 'stone garden' in German, is one of Australia's most legendary and pioneering cool-climate Rieslings. Conceived in 1962 by Colin Gramp, this iconic wine was born from a daring experiment to plant Riesling on a windswept, bone-dry, and incredibly rocky ridge in the Eden Valley. The terrain was so unforgiving that workers reportedly had to use dynamite to blast planting holes into the hard schist and quartz soils. This extreme terroir forces the vines to struggle, resulting in a wine of immense concentration, laser-like acidity, and a distinctive flinty minerality. Steingarten represents a benchmark for dry Australian Riesling, celebrated for its purity, structure, and ability to reflect the rugged beauty of its high-altitude origins.
