Kavalan's Solist Vinho Barrique is a legendary expression in the world of single malt whisky, showcasing the revolutionary STR (Shaving, Toasting, and Re-charring) cask treatment technique pioneered by the late, legendary whisky expert Dr. Jim Swan. This specific single cask release, bottled in 2020 for the New Year, represents the pinnacle of Taiwanese maturation. The 'Vinho' casks are sourced from American oak wine barrels that previously held seasoned red and white wines. After being meticulously shaved to expose fresh wood, toasted to caramelize the wood sugars, and deeply charred, these casks are filled with Kavalan's new make spirit. In the intense subtropical heat of Yilan County, the spirit interacts rapidly with the wood, extracting rich, concentrated flavors of dark berry fruits, caramelized sugars, and complex spices at an accelerated rate that rivals decades of aging in cooler climates.

Founded in 2005 by the King Car Group under founder Tien-Tsai Lee, Kavalan Distillery is located in Yuanshan Township within Yilan County, Taiwan. Named after the indigenous Kavalan people of the Yilan plain, the distillery pioneered world-class Taiwanese single malt whisky production using mineral-rich meltwater sourced from the nearby Snow Mountain range. Kavalan capitalizes on Taiwan's intense subtropical climate, which accelerates the wood maturation process to yield remarkably complex, rich, and mature flavor profiles in a compressed timeframe.
