This double-aging process softens the distillery's signature medicinal peat smoke, coastal brine, and intense tar notes, wrapping them in layers of rich dark chocolate, sticky dates, and sun-dried raisins. The history of Lagavulin is steeped in local lore, from the illicit stills that operated in the secluded cove of Lagavulin Bay in the 18th century to its official founding in 1816. Officially established in 1816 by John Johnston, Lagavulin is situated on the windswept southern coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland, overlooking the dramatic ruins of Dunyvaig Castle.
