β¨ Technical Specifications
Released exclusively for the 2017 FΓ¨is Γle, the Islay Festival of Music and Malt, this exceptional 16-year-old single malt represents a masterful marriage of Islay's rugged maritime peat and the sun-drenched sweetness of southern Europe. Distilled in 2001 and matured in traditional oak before undergoing a secondary maturation in Moscatel cask wood, it pays homage to Lagavulin's legendary slow distillation process. The Moscatel casks infuse the distillery's signature medicinal smoke, campfire ash, and coastal brine with layers of sweet dried fruits, orange peel, and floral honey. This limited festival bottling captures the celebratory spirit of Islay, where distillers and whisky enthusiasts gather annually along the wave-swept shores of Lagavulin Bay.
πΎ About the Producer
Officially established in 1816 by John Johnston, Lagavulin is situated on the windswept southern coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland, overlooking the dramatic ruins of Dunyvaig Castle. Today owned by Diageo, the historic distillery is celebrated for its uncompromising dedication to traditional methods, utilising heavily peated malt and remarkably slow distillation in distinctive pear-shaped pot stills. This meticulous process yields an intensely rich, oily, and complex spirit that embodies the quintessential maritime character of southern Islay. Renowned for balancing ferocious peat smoke, brine, and medicinal notes with deep dried-fruit sweetness, Lagavulin achieves its definitive expression in its legendary 16 Year Old single malt.
