✨ Technical Specifications
This extraordinary 40-year-old single malt is a legendary relic from Lagavulin, distilled in 1979 and bottled in 2019 from the famed Cask 112. It was selected and bottled for 'The Syndicate'—a historic association of Islay estates and whisky enthusiasts established in 1958 who secured some of the finest casks on the island. Four decades of quiet maturation on the damp, wind-swept shores of Lagavulin Bay have transformed the distillery's characteristically intense, medicinal peat smoke into a sublime, deeply complex masterpiece. The aggressive maritime brine and peat of its youth have softened into elegant notes of old leather, dried dark fruits, polished mahogany, and a gentle, lingering peat hearth smoke. This bottling represents the absolute pinnacle of Islay maturation, showcasing how time and the coastal microclimate of Port Ellen can tame and elevate a peated giant.
🍾 About the Producer
Officially established in 1816 by John Johnston, Lagavulin is situated on the windswept southern coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland, overlooking the dramatic ruins of Dunyvaig Castle. Today owned by Diageo, the historic distillery is celebrated for its uncompromising dedication to traditional methods, utilising heavily peated malt and remarkably slow distillation in distinctive pear-shaped pot stills. This meticulous process yields an intensely rich, oily, and complex spirit that embodies the quintessential maritime character of southern Islay. Renowned for balancing ferocious peat smoke, brine, and medicinal notes with deep dried-fruit sweetness, Lagavulin achieves its definitive expression in its legendary 16 Year Old single malt.
