Nestled on the rugged south coast of Islay, Laphroaig has been crafting its famously polarizing, deeply peated single malt Scotch whisky since 1815. This rare 25-year-old expression, bottled in 2018 at a robust cask strength of 52% ABV, represents the pinnacle of the distillery's art. The signature character of Laphroaig is forged by Islay's unique environment: the soft, peat-filtered waters of the Kilbride Stream and the hand-cut peat from the Glenmachrie bogs, rich in marine vegetation that imparts a distinct medicinal, iodine, and seaweed aroma. Legend has it that during American Prohibition, Laphroaig's distinctive medicinal profile allowed it to be legally imported into the United States as a pharmaceutical therapeutic. This exceptional bottling marries the intense, smoky peat of spirit aged in American oak ex-bourbon barrels with the rich, sweet, dried-fruit complexity of European oak Oloroso sherry casks over a quarter-century of slow maturation in coastal dunnage warehouses kissed by the Atlantic breeze.

Laphroaig blev grundlagt i 1815 af brødrene Donald og Alexander Johnston på Islays rå sydkyst og står i dag som et af Skotlands mest markante og kompromisløse single malt-destillerier. Destilleriet ligger helt ude ved Atlanterhavets brænding nær Port Ellen, hvor det henter sit bløde, tørveholdige vand fra Kilbride Stream. Som et af de få steder bevarer man her traditionelle malterigulve til en del af byggen, som tørres over håndskåren Islay-tørv spækket med mos og maritim lyng. Gæringen og destillationen på asymmetriske kobber-pot stills frembringer et rådestillat med en umiskendelig karakter af medicinske noter, fenoler, jod og salt havluft. Hovedparten af modningen foregår på udvalgte ex-bourbonfade i kystnære dunnage-lagre, hvilket afrunder den intense røg med cremet vanilje, sødmefuld eg og moden frugtplantage.
