β¨ Technical Specifications
Nestled on the rugged south coast of Islay, Laphroaig has been crafting its famously polarizing, deeply peated single malts since 1815. This extraordinary 27-year-old expression, released in 2007 to celebrate the Friends of Laphroaig, represents nearly three decades of patient maturation in the distillery's coastal dunnage warehouses. Laphroaig's signature character is defined by its use of hand-cut peat from the Glenmachrie peat moss, rich in ancient heather, moss, and seaweed, which infuses the malt with a distinctively medicinal, iodine, and sea-spray aroma. Over twenty-seven years, the aggressive, fiery peat of youth has mellowed into an incredibly complex, elegant spirit, marrying maritime smoke with rich dried fruits, old leather, and tropical undertones derived from long oak contact.
πΎ About the Producer
Established in 1815 along the rugged south coast of Islay by Donald and Alexander Johnston, Laphroaig represents one of Scotland's most distinctive and unapologetic single malt whisky profiles. Perched right against the Atlantic shore near Port Ellen, the distillery draws peaty, soft water from the Kilbride Stream and maintains traditional floor maltings that provide a fraction of its barley, heavily kilned over hand-cut Islay peat rich in moss and maritime heather. Fermentation and distillation across asymmetric copper pot stills yield a raw spirit characterized by striking medicinal, phenolic, iodine, and maritime brine elements. Primary maturation in seasoned ex-bourbon barrels, bolstered in coastal dunnage warehouses, tempers this intense smokiness with creamy vanilla, sweet oak, and orchard fruit. Benchmark releases like the flagship 10 Year Old, Quarter Cask, annual CΓ irdeas bottlings, and the venerable 25 Year Old Cask Strength epitomize Islay's elemental terroir and artisanal distilling heritage.
