Laphroaig, established in 1815 by the Johnston brothers on the rugged south coast of Islay, is legendary for its uncompromisingly smoky, medicinal character. The Quarter Cask expression is a brilliant nod to 19th-century Scotch history, when smaller casks were used to transport whisky across the Scottish hills on packhorses. By reviving this traditional method, Laphroaig subjects its spirit to double maturation: first in standard ex-bourbon barrels, and then in smaller quarter casks.
