Hailing from the rugged, windswept south coast of Islay, Scotland, Laphroaig has been crafting its famously peat-smoke-forward single malt whiskies since 1815. The Quarter Cask expression is a brilliant nod to 19th-century distilling history, when whisky was transported across the island in smaller casks on packhorses. By reviving this tradition, Laphroaig utilizes casks that are one-quarter the size of a standard butt, increasing the liquid-to-wood contact by up to 60%. The spirit is first matured in standard ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred to these smaller quarter casks. This double-maturation process accelerates the wood influence, beautifully softening Laphroaig's intense, medicinal peat, iodine, and seaweed character with warm notes of coconut, vanilla, and sweet spices derived from the active American oak.
