Laphroaig, established in 1815 on the rugged south coast of Islay, is legendary for its uncompromisingly peaty, medicinal, and maritime single malts. This exceptional 17-year-old expression, bottled in 2022, represents a masterclass in wood interaction. Originally distilled at Laphroaig, it underwent a secondary maturation in a custom-built 'Octave' cask (Cask No. 5634019) by independent bottler Duncan Taylor. Octave casks, which are roughly one-eighth the size of a standard butt, drastically increase the wood-to-liquid ratio. This intense contact tempers Laphroaig's fierce, iodine-rich peat smoke with deep, concentrated notes of toasted oak, dark chocolate, dried fruits, and warm baking spices, resulting in an incredibly complex and rare coastal dram.
