Hailing from the precipitous, sun-drenched terraces of the northern Rhône, M. Chapoutier's 'Les Gadilles' is a profound expression of Côte-Rôtie. The name Côte-Rôtie, or 'roasted slope,' speaks to the intense solar exposure these steep schist and granite hillsides receive. According to local lore, the medieval lord Maugiron bequeathed his hillside estate to his two daughters—one blonde, one brunette—giving rise to the famous Côte Blonde and Côte Brune sub-regions. Crafted primarily from Syrah, 'Les Gadilles' is born from Chapoutier's legendary commitment to biodynamic viticulture. The wine is aged in oak barrels, resulting in a complex profile of dark bramble fruits, cracked black pepper, violets, and a distinct smoky minerality that reflects the ancient, broken soils of this historic appellation. All Chapoutier labels famously feature Braille, a tribute to the pioneering blind teacher Maurice de La Sizeranne.
