M. Chapoutier's "Pie VI" Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a profound tribute to the historical papal connection of the Southern Rhône, named in honor of Pope Pius VI. This cuvée is crafted from a classic blend of Grenache and Syrah, sourced from select parcels rooted in the iconic terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, characterized by its famous "galets roulés" (rounded quartzite stones) and sandy-clay soils. Adhering to Chapoutier's signature biodynamic farming philosophy, the grapes are carefully hand-harvested and fermented using native yeasts. The wine is aged in a combination of concrete tanks and large oak demi-muids to preserve the vibrant purity of the fruit while cultivating a refined, age-worthy structure. The result is a deeply expressive red wine showcasing aromas of ripe dark berries, wild garrigue, black pepper, and licorice, backed by velvety tannins and a mineral-driven finish.

🍾 wine.about_producer

Established in 1808 in Tain-l'Hermitage, M. Chapoutier is one of the Rhône Valley's most historic and revered wine producers, currently led by the visionary Michel Chapoutier who transitioned the estate to biodynamic farming in the 1990s. The maison is globally celebrated for its pioneering "sélections parcellaires" (single-vineyard wines) and its commitment to expressing the pure terroir of prestigious appellations like Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Utilizing traditional, low-intervention winemaking techniques, Chapoutier produces highly acclaimed reds and whites, including iconic labels such as the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac, Côte-Rôtie La Mordorée, and the Hermitage-derived La Sizeranne. Beyond the Rhône, the family has expanded its terroir-driven philosophy to exceptional estates in Roussillon, Australia's Victoria region, and Portugal's Douro Valley.
