Markus Molitor's Zeltinger Schlossberg * Pinot Noir is a masterclass in cool-climate red winemaking from the steep, slate-laden slopes of the Middle Mosel. While the Mosel is world-renowned for Riesling, it possesses a rich, centuries-old history of red wine production, dating back to Roman times and medieval Cistercian monks, which was revived in the late 20th century. Molitor, who took over his family estate in 1984, has been a pioneer in reclaiming this heritage. The Zeltinger Schlossberg vineyard features incredibly steep, south-facing terraces composed of weathered Devonian blue slate. This unique terroir absorbs the sun's warmth during the day and radiates it back to the vines at night, allowing Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) to ripen fully while retaining its signature high acidity. The single asterisk (*) denotes Molitor's entry-level premium tier, indicating a wine of remarkable elegance and precision. Fermented spontaneously with wild yeasts and aged in French oak barriques, this Pinot Noir delivers a striking tension between bright red berry fruit, subtle smoky spice, and a profound, stony minerality.

Founded upon an eighth-generation family viticultural heritage, Weingut Markus Molitor was transformed in 1984 when twenty-year-old Markus Molitor took over the estate at Haus Klosterberg with the dedicated mission of restoring Mosel Riesling to its historic world-class stature. Situated in Bernkastel-Kues in Germany's legendary Mosel region, the winery meticulously cultivates precipitous slate vineyards across renowned grand cru sites such as Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Erdener Treppchen. Molitor practices low yields, ultra-selective late hand-harvesting, and gentle spontaneous fermentation in ancient, deep vaulted cellars with minimal intervention. The estate is globally celebrated for its site-expressive Rieslings—distinguished by white, green, and gold capsules indicating dry, off-dry, and botrytized sweet styles—as well as remarkably complex, structured Pinot Noir.
