The story of Arienzo is deeply intertwined with the modern history of Rioja. Originally created by the historic Domecq dynasty, the brand was integrated into the legendary Marqués de Riscal portfolio in 2010, uniting two of Spain's most prestigious winemaking legacies. Sourced primarily from selected vineyards in the clay-limestone soils of Rioja Alavesa, where the Sierra de Cantabria shelters the vines, the Arienzo Gran Reserva represents a classic expression of traditional Rioja. It is crafted predominantly from Tempranillo, complemented by Graciano and Mazuelo. Following the strict traditions of the Gran Reserva classification, the wine undergoes extended aging—spending at least two years in American oak casks followed by several years of refinement in the bottle. This patient process coaxes out complex tertiary aromas of dried cherries, leather, sweet tobacco, and exotic spices, framed by silky, integrated tannins and a vibrant acidity characteristic of the Alavesa sub-region.

Founded in 1858 by Camilo Hurtado de Amézaga, Marqués de Riscal is one of the oldest and most pioneering wineries in Spain's Rioja region, situated in the historic town of Elciego. The estate revolutionized Spanish viticulture by introducing Bordeaux-style vinification and barrel aging techniques, earning worldwide acclaim as the first non-French wine to win the Diploma of Honor at the Exhibition of Bordeaux in 1895. In addition to its legendary, structured Rioja Reserva and Gran Reserva Tempranillo expressions, the bodega expanded into Castilla y León in the 1970s, playing an instrumental role in establishing the Rueda appellation with benchmark Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc wines. Today, Marqués de Riscal seamlessly fuses classical winemaking mastery with avant-garde innovation, epitomized by its iconic Frank Gehry-designed winery complex.
