Marqués de Riscal, founded in 1858, is a cornerstone of Rioja's winemaking history. The 'XR' label pays homage to a historic cellar tradition: during the late 19th and 20th centuries, the winemaker would mark exceptional casks with the chalk letters 'XR' (Extra Reserva) to denote wines of superior quality destined for the winery's private collection. Revived as a modern tribute, this Reserva is crafted primarily from Tempranillo with a touch of Graciano, sourced from old vines in the clay-limestone soils of Rioja Alavesa. Aged in American oak barrels, it beautifully bridges classic Rioja elegance with modern fruit intensity, offering a complex profile of dark berries, liquorice, sweet spices, and balsamic undertones.

Marqués de Riscal blev grundlagt i 1858 af Camilo Hurtado de Amézaga i den historiske by Elciego og er en af de ældste og mest nyskabende vingårde i Rioja. Huset revolutionerede spansk vinavl ved at introducere bordeaux-inspirerede vinifikationsmetoder og fadlagring, hvilket førte til international anerkendelse, da de i 1895 som det første ikke-franske vinhus modtog æresdiplomet ved Bordeaux-udstillingen. Ud over de legendariske, strukturerede Reserva- og Gran Reserva-vine på Tempranillo ekspanderede bodegaen i 1970'erne til Castilla y León, hvor den spillede en afgørende rolle i oprettelsen af Rueda-appellationen med stilskabende hvidvine på Verdejo og Sauvignon Blanc. I dag forener Marqués de Riscal klassisk vinhåndværk med avantgardistisk innovation, smukt personificeret ved deres ikoniske vineri tegnet af stjernearkitekten Frank Gehry.
