The story of Torres Gran Coronas Black Label—now famously known as Mas La Plana—is one of the most legendary chapters in Spanish winemaking history. In the late 1960s, Miguel A. Torres defied local conventions by planting French Cabernet Sauvignon in the clay-limestone soils of the Penedès region in Catalunya. The crowning moment came at the 1979 Gault-Millau Wine Olympiad in Paris, where the 1970 vintage of this 'Black Label' Cabernet Sauvignon triumphed in a blind tasting over some of Bordeaux's most celebrated First Growths. This historic victory shattered the myth that world-class Cabernet could only be grown in France. Cultivated on the single estate of Mas La Plana, the wine undergoes meticulous fermentation and extensive aging in French oak barrels. It delivers a profound, complex profile marked by ripe blackcurrant, truffle, baking spices, and elegant balsamic undertones, representing the pinnacle of Catalan viticulture.
