In 1770, the Abbey of Montserrat established the L'Aranyó estate in an arid, unforgiving corner of Catalunya as a place of penance for rebellious monks. The extreme climate—scorching summers and freezing winters—was considered a physical purgatory. Yet, the monks discovered that this harsh terroir yielded exceptional grapes. Legend whispers that large barrels of their dark, robust wine would mysteriously vanish, attributed by the penitent monks to the angels. Today, Familia Torres honors this history with Purgatori, a powerful red blend dominated by Cariñena and Garnacha, with a touch of Syrah. Grown in poor, clay-limestone soils under extreme conditions, the grapes undergo fermentation before aging in French oak. The resulting wine is intensely aromatic, offering dark forest fruits, Mediterranean herbs, and a smoky, mineral undertone that reflects its legendary, sun-baked origin.
