Beginning in the late 1980s, Dirk challenged the region's centuries-old focus on sweet Port by championing dry, elegant table wines that capture the rugged soul of the Douro. This Reserva style is typically sourced from historic, low-yielding field blend vineyards dominated by varieties like Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Amarela, clinging to steep schist terraces. Fermented with traditional methods and aged in French oak, the wine showcases Niepoort's signature style: a remarkable balance of wild dark fruit, deep mineral tension, and a fresh, Burgundian-like acidity that defies the hot climate of the valley.

Niepoort blev grundlagt i 1842 af Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort og har siden udviklet sig fra et hæderkronet, familiedrevet portvinshus til en af de mest visionære og indflydelsesrige drivkræfter i portugisisk vinavl. Under ledelse af femte generations ikonoklast, Dirk Niepoort, og hans søn Daniel har huset revolutioneret vinfremstillingen i Douro ved at gå forrest med terroirdrevne, elegante tørre bordvine med lavere alkoholprocenter, sideløbende med deres monumentale hedvine. Druerne høstes fra stejle skiferterrasser i Cima Corgo samt fra granit- og kalkholdige lerjorde i Dão, Bairrada, Vinho Verde og de vulkanske skråninger på Pico.
