In 1990, Dirk Niepoort set out to prove that the Douro Valley could produce dry table wines of world-class stature, resulting in an experimental red that would lay the foundation for the region's dry wine revolution. While that initial project eventually birthed the famous Redoma, the legendary 'Robustus' name was later revived to represent the absolute pinnacle of traditional, long-aged Douro red winemaking. Sourced from field-blend old vines—some over 80 years old—clinging to steep schist slopes, Robustus is a tribute to the deep, structured, and rustic reds of the past. Unlike modern reds that see quick oak aging, Robustus undergoes a patient, traditional maturation of up to four years in large, old wooden casks (fuders). This slow, gentle oxidative aging tames the formidable tannins of the old vines, resulting in a masterpiece of remarkable depth, fresh acidity, and profound mineral complexity.
