Niepoort's Tinta Amarela is a brilliant exploration of one of the Douro's most challenging and temperamental grape varieties. Often avoided by growers due to its thin skins and extreme sensitivity to rot—earning it a reputation as a vineyard heartbreaker—Tinta Amarela (also known as Trincadeira) finds a sympathetic champion in Dirk Niepoort. Sourced from high-altitude, old-vine parcels rooted in the Douro's classic schist soils, this monovarietal bottling defies the regional stereotype of dense, highly extracted reds.
