Niepoort's Vertente, often adorned with a bee on its label to celebrate the vital role of pollinators and biodiversity in the vineyards, represents a lighter, highly elegant expression of the rugged Douro Valley. The name 'Vertente' translates to 'slope,' paying homage to the steep, schist-laden terraces where the grapes are grown. Sourced from a mix of old vines ranging from 30 to 80 years old in the Pinhão Valley and younger vineyards at Quinta de Nápoles, this red blend typically features Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. Dirk Niepoort's winemaking philosophy shines through here, prioritizing freshness, moderate alcohol, and mineral precision over heavy extraction. The wine is fermented in stainless steel before undergoing aging in French oak barrels, resulting in a beautifully balanced red that marries dark fruit notes with a vibrant, soil-driven character.

Niepoort blev grundlagt i 1842 af Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort og er et ikonisk, uafhængigt familieejet hus med base i Vila Nova de Gaia og dybe historiske rødder i Portugals Douro-dal. Huset har i over et århundrede været berømt for sine skelsættende Colheita- og Vintage Ports, men gennemgik en dynamisk renæssance under femtegenerations-visionæren Dirk Niepoort, der banede vejen for den moderne æra af uforstærkede Douro-bordvine i absolut topklasse. Med en kompromisløs forkærlighed for gamle vinmarker med field blends, minimal intervention i vinfremstillingen og et unikt terroirudtryk skaber vinhuset hyldede tørre vine som Batuta, Charme og Redoma sideløbende med nyere projekter i Bairrada og Dão. I dag står Niepoort som et globalt beundret pejlemærke for portugisisk vinkunst, der ubesværet forener en tidløs portvinsarv med innovative, elegante og mineralske bordvine.
