Niepoort's Vertente is a masterclass in balancing the rugged intensity of the Douro Valley with the elegant, fresh winemaking philosophy championed by Dirk Niepoort. The name 'Vertente' translates to 'slope' or 'declivity,' paying homage to the dizzyingly steep, terraced schist slopes of the Cima Corgo where the grapes are grown. This red blend is crafted from a combination of older vines, ranging from 50 to 80 years old, which contribute depth, structure, and mineral complexity, alongside younger vineyards that inject vibrant fruit and acidity. Typical of the region, the blend features classic Portuguese varieties such as Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. After fermentation, the wine is aged for nearly two years in French oak barrels, resulting in a beautifully integrated, medium-bodied red that defies the traditional heavy, over-extracted style of the region, offering instead a linear, mineral-driven, and highly expressive portrait of the Douro terroir.
