Agharta is a legendary project created by pioneering winemaker Pax Mahle, designed to push the boundaries of California Syrah through extreme extended barrel aging. Named after the mythical subterranean kingdom and inspired by Miles Davis's seminal 1975 live jazz album, Agharta wines are sourced from dramatic, cool-climate sites in the North Coast, most notably the rugged Alder Springs Vineyard in Mendocino County. Unlike the fresher, more restrained Syrahs under the core Pax label, Agharta Syrahs spend an extraordinary amount of time in neutral French oak—often between four to six years—before bottling. This ultra-extended elevage allows the intense, concentrated mountain fruit to slowly oxidize, soften, and develop immense complexity, resulting in a wine of singular character, dense texture, and savory depth.

Founded in 2000 by Pax and Pamela Mahle, Pax is a pioneering Sonoma County winery celebrated for redefining California Syrah through a lens of elegance and restraint. Based in Sebastopol, California, the winery sources fruit from cool-climate, coastal-influenced vineyards across Sonoma and Mendocino counties, such as the acclaimed Alder Springs and Castelli Knight Ranch. Pax's winemaking philosophy centers on minimal intervention, employing whole-cluster fermentation, native yeasts, and aging in concrete vats and neutral French oak to highlight pure terroir. The estate is highly renowned for its savory, structurally complex Syrahs, alongside vibrant, terroir-driven expressions of Gamay, Chenin Blanc, and Mondeuse.
