Penfolds' legacy is deeply intertwined with the history of Australian fortified winemaking, a tradition that predates their famous dry reds. The Penfolds 50 Year Old Rare Aged Tawny represents the pinnacle of this heritage, crafted from a complex solera system housed in the historic cellars of Kalimna and Magill Estate. This extraordinary blend contains parcels of wine spanning decades, with the youngest component being at least half a century old, and some elements dating back to the early 20th century. Over decades of wood aging in small oak casks, the wine undergoes a slow concentration, developing a profound complexity, intense rancio characters, and a viscous, syrupy texture. It is a liquid archive of South Australian winemaking history, curated by generations of master blenders.

Penfolds blev grundlagt i 1844 af dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold og hans hustru Mary på Magill Estate i South Australia og er i dag et af Australiens ældste og mest ikoniske vinhuse. Ejendommen opnåede legendarisk international anerkendelse i 1950'erne under den visionære chefvinmager Max Schubert, som skabte Penfolds Grange og revolutionerede landets vinfremstilling. Drevet af en berømt filosofi om at blande på tværs af regioner og druesorter udvælger Penfolds enestående druer fra historiske australske terroirs – herunder Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale og Coonawarra – samt fra udvalgte internationale topområder.
