First created in 1962, Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz is a landmark Australian red that showcases the unique synergy between the Shiraz grape and the cool-climate terroir of Coonawarra in South Australia. Historically, while many Penfolds reds championed warm-climate multi-regional blending and American oak, Bin 128 took a different path. It is crafted to highlight the elegant, aromatic, and peppery characteristics of Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soils over limestone. Since the 1980s, the wine has been matured exclusively in French oak hogsheads, a practice that refines its structured tannins and enhances its vibrant red fruit and spice profile. This wine represents a sophisticated, terroir-driven chapter in Penfolds' rich winemaking legacy.

🍾 wine.about_producer

Founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold at Magill Estate near Adelaide, Penfolds is one of Australia's oldest and most iconic wineries, now headquartered in Nuriootpa, South Australia. The estate is celebrated for pioneering a unique house style centered on multi-regional and multi-vineyard blending, a philosophy perfected by legendary winemaker Max Schubert in the mid-20th century. Penfolds is globally renowned for its robust, structured red wines aged in premium oak, most notably its flagship Grange—a rich, collectible Shiraz-based blend—alongside acclaimed expressions like Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz and Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, while maintaining its deep South Australian roots, the producer has expanded its winemaking footprint to include exceptional terroirs in California, Bordeaux, and beyond.
