Penfolds Reserve Bin A Chardonnay has established a stellar reputation as one of Australia's finest white wines, representing a highly sophisticated, single-region style from the cool-climate Adelaide Hills. A unique aspect of this wine's identity is its naming convention: the bin number changes with each vintage to incorporate the year, meaning the '15A' designation specifically represents the exceptional 2015 vintage. First created in the mid-1990s, the Reserve Bin A program was designed to push the boundaries of Australian Chardonnay, pioneering a style defined by complexity, striking minerality, and structural elegance. The fruit is hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, and transferred directly into French oak barriques without settling. It undergoes 100% wild yeast fermentation and complete malolactic fermentation on its yeast lees, with regular battonage to build a creamy, textured mouthfeel that beautifully balances the region's naturally high, vibrant acidity.
🍾 wine.about_producer
Founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold at Magill Estate near Adelaide, Penfolds is one of Australia's oldest and most iconic wineries, now headquartered in Nuriootpa, South Australia. The estate is celebrated for pioneering a unique house style centered on multi-regional and multi-vineyard blending, a philosophy perfected by legendary winemaker Max Schubert in the mid-20th century. Penfolds is globally renowned for its robust, structured red wines aged in premium oak, most notably its flagship Grange—a rich, collectible Shiraz-based blend—alongside acclaimed expressions like Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz and Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, while maintaining its deep South Australian roots, the producer has expanded its winemaking footprint to include exceptional terroirs in California, Bordeaux, and beyond.
