Penfolds Grange, originally released as Grange Hermitage, is the undisputed crown jewel of Australian wine. Its origin story is steeped in legend: in 1950, winemaker Max Schubert visited Bordeaux and was inspired to create a great Australian red capable of aging for decades. His early attempts were met with disdain by Penfolds management, who ordered him to cease production. Undeterred, Schubert secretly continued to make the wine in the depths of the cellars, hiding the 1957, 1958, and 1959 vintages. When the board finally relented and tasted the aged bottles, they realized its genius. Grange is defined by its multi-vineyard, multi-regional blending philosophy, sourcing the finest Shiraz (and occasionally a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon) from historic South Australian regions like the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. The wine is matured for 18 to 20 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads, resulting in a monumental, powerfully structured red with immense complexity, dark fruit depth, and savory richness. It is officially recognized as a South Australian Heritage Icon.
