Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz holds a sacred place in Australian viticultural history, sourced entirely from the original, historic Magill Estate vineyard established by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold in 1844. Located on the edge of the Adelaide foothills, this urban single vineyard stands as a living monument to the winery's origins. First released in 1983, Magill Estate Shiraz is a distinct departure from Penfolds' signature multi-regional blending philosophy. It is crafted using traditional, hands-on methods: the grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in open wax-lined concrete vats, basket pressed, and aged in a combination of new French and American oak hogsheads. This produces a highly elegant, medium-to-full-bodied Shiraz characterized by floral notes, red fruits, and fine-grained tannins, offering a softer, more velvety expression of South Australian Shiraz compared to its robust sibling, Grange.

Penfolds blev grundlagt i 1844 af dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold og hans hustru Mary på Magill Estate i South Australia og er i dag et af Australiens ældste og mest ikoniske vinhuse. Ejendommen opnåede legendarisk international anerkendelse i 1950'erne under den visionære chefvinmager Max Schubert, som skabte Penfolds Grange og revolutionerede landets vinfremstilling. Drevet af en berømt filosofi om at blande på tværs af regioner og druesorter udvælger Penfolds enestående druer fra historiske australske terroirs – herunder Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale og Coonawarra – samt fra udvalgte internationale topområder.
