Penfolds has a storied history of working with Rhône varieties in South Australia, a region blessed with some of the oldest continuously producing Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre (locally known as Mataro) vines in the world. Inspired by the traditional blends of the Southern Rhône Valley, this wine showcases the synergy of these three grapes. Grenache provides vibrant raspberry and cherry aromatics alongside a plush mid-palate; Shiraz contributes rich dark plum notes, weight, and structural backbone; while Mourvèdre lends savory complexity, earthiness, and fine-grained tannins. Established in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold at Magill Estate in the Mount Lofty foothills, Penfolds represents one of the foundational cornerstones of Australian fine wine.
