Born from an internal project initiated in 1995, the 'Red Winemaking Trial' (RWT) was designed to redefine Barossa Valley Shiraz. While Penfolds' flagship Grange represents a multi-regional blend matured in American oak, RWT was conceived as its stylistic antithesis: a single-region Barossa Shiraz aged exclusively in fine French oak hogsheads. First released with the 1997 vintage, this wine immediately captivated collectors with its opulent, fleshy texture, vibrant blue fruit aromatics, and velvety tannins. In 2016, Penfolds officially designated it 'Bin 798' to integrate it into their classic bin numbering system, though it remains affectionately known by its trial moniker. It stands as a masterclass in how French oak can frame and elevate the natural opulence of Barossa's old-vine Shiraz.
