โจ Technical Specifications
Bastardo is one of the legendary, nearly extinct grape varieties of Madeira. Once widely planted across the island prior to the devastating phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th century, it has become an ultra-rare treasure. Pereira D'Oliveira is world-renowned for preserving precious, ancient stocks of this historic varietal. The wine is crafted using the traditional canteiro system, where it undergoes decades of gentle, warm aging in seasoned oak casks in the lofts of Funchal. This slow, oxidative process coaxes out an incredibly complex profile. Typically styled as medium-dry (meio seco), Bastardo Madeira is celebrated for its striking tension between high natural acidity, rich dried fruit notes, and a distinctive, slightly rustic, smoky, and herbaceous complexity that sets it apart from other noble Madeira grapes.
