The Rare Malts Selection, launched by United Distillers in the 1990s, was designed to showcase cask-strength, un-chillfiltered single malts from lost or highly prized distilleries. Among these, the Port Ellen 22 Year Old bottlings—distilled in the late 1970s before the distillery's tragic closure in 1983—stand as monumental icons of liquid history. Sourced from the windswept south coast of Islay, this legendary single malt captures the raw, untamed spirit of its coastal home. It is celebrated for its incredibly complex interplay of intense peat smoke, industrial oiliness, maritime brine, and delicate, sweet citrus. The historic peat bogs of Islay and the distillery's proximity to the sea infused the maturing casks with an unmistakable salty tang and soft leather character, making this rare 22-year-old expression one of the most sought-after treasures for collectors and connoisseurs worldwide.

Port Ellen blev grundlagt i 1825 af Alexander Mackay på Islays sydkyst og står i dag som et af de mest ikoniske og ærefrygtindgydende navne i skotsk whiskyhistorie. Efter en række udvidelser under Distillers Company Limited (i dag Diageo) lukkede destilleriet under whiskybranchens krise i 1983. Det opnåede hurtigt en mytisk status som et såkaldt 'spøgelsesdestilleri', indtil det efter en gennemgribende og omhyggelig genopbygning genåbnede dørene i 2024. Port Ellen er verdenskendt for sin raffinerede, maritime profil, der forener elegant tørverøg, en fyldig, olieret tekstur, kystnær saltholdighed og fine nuancer af citrus.
