The 'Séries' line from Real Companhia Velha is a celebrated collection of micro-vinifications designed to showcase the diversity of the Douro's indigenous grape varieties, particularly those that have fallen out of favor in modern times. Bastardo—historically significant but notoriously difficult to cultivate due to its early ripening and pale skin—is the star of this bottling. Known as Trousseau in France's Jura region, Bastardo was once a staple of Port blends but was largely abandoned. Real Companhia Velha revives this ancient grape, crafting a light-colored, highly aromatic red wine that defies the typical heavy, extracted style of the Douro. Fermented with minimal extraction to preserve its delicate floral and wild berry aromas, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the liquid history of Portugal's oldest wine region.

Founded in 1756 by Royal Charter of King José I under the guidance of the Marquis of Pombal, Real Companhia Velha is the oldest and most historic wine enterprise in Portugal. With its storied maturation cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and sprawling estate vineyards across the Douro Valley, the company was central to the creation of the world's first officially demarcated wine region.
